I feel that it could have been used for so much more, like building an army of atronachs or constructing a super golem bodyguard. The whole thing felt tacked on and under-developed to me. Recipe drops related to it are very very rare in my experience as well, so short of out of the game knowledge you have as the player your character would never be able to fully explore using it. There's a very brief book that outlines the basics of how to use it, but beyond that there's just no information on how it works and what it's good for. But how the heck does my character know all about it?
Sure we as the player have things like UESP, there's the guide book and of course these forums. One thing that always bothered me about the Antronach Forge is how you'd know all the recipes and how it works based on in-game knowledge.
